The House Ways Means Subcommittee on Human Resources conducted a hearing to review the data on child deaths from maltreatment. State reports show that in 2009, 1,700 children died nationally due to maltreatment, but research shows the reports may substantially underestimate the number.  The Government Accountability Office has reviewed the data and presented it during this hearing.

The House Budget Committee conducted an oversight hearing on the Medicare Payment Advisory Board, which was created by the Health Care law to control costs. The board has the authority to enact cuts, unless Congress passes an alternative that achieves the same savings.

A House Energy and Commerce subcommittee looks at the federal government’s use of wireless spectrum and whether some of that might be reallocated to meet a growing commercial demand.  Testifying before the panel was Lawrence Strickling, who heads the Commerce Department’s National Telecommunication and Information Administration.  Rep. Greg Walden (R-OR) chairs the hearing.

Republicans on the Senate Finance Committee spoke to reporters on Capitol Hill after boycotting a meeting by that panel on pending free trade agreements with South Korea, Colombia & Panama.

Senate Republicans appear to have blocked, at least temporarily, a meeting of the Finance Committee to consider free trade agreements with Korea, Colombia, and Panama, along with federal aid money for displaced American workers.

The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee held a hearing on diabetes research, specifically type 1 diabetes and its impact on children.  Witnesses include actor Kevin Kline, who is with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, children with type 1 diabetes, and officials from the Food and Drug Administration and the National Institutes of Health.
