So much for my predictive powers.
I said on Chris Matthews' Hardball show on MSNBC Thursday that I "would not be surprised" to see Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele give a "Friday night resignation" in the wake of the RNC's "leather-themed nightclub" scandal as we in the media seem to get a giggly schoolboy's delight in calling it.
Well, Friday night has come and gone, friends and neighbors, and Steele's position looks quite secure.
He is still daring fellow Repubs to fire him and, despite calls from peeved social conservatives like Tony Perkins to give your donations to directly Republican candidates, not the RNC -- and Sarah Palin's demand to have her name removed from an upcoming RNC fundraiser in New Orleans -- it is very telling that none of the party's current officeholders or candidates is calling on Steele to walk the plank.
In fact, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, a 2010 presidential hopeful, says Steele still has his support despite the "terrible" and "stupid" episode, for which a staffer has been fired.
That's a sign that Steele's at RNC to stay for the rest of his term which expires at the end of this year. If the party does well in November, which is expected, he could still go out on a high note despite his ongoing controversies.
