Living Well Alabama

Better Choices   Better Health

Tuesdays, February 1 - March 8, 2011
Time: 9-11:30 a.m.
Place: Room 118

Are you frustrated from dealing with the pain and fatigue associated with a chronic disease or condition?  Is it difficult to talk effectively with your medical professionals, family and friends about your condition?  Would you like to find new ways to increase your strength and energy, improve your nutrition, and feel better about life?

If you answered “yes” to any or all of these questions, let LIVING WELL ALABAMA help you find solutions to these and other issues involving chronic health conditions.

Chronic diseases are the leading cause of death and disability in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).  Approximately one out of 10 Americans, or 25 million people, experience major limitations due to chronic diseases.  The key to living with a chronic disease or condition is learning to control the symptoms and effects so the disease doesn’t control you.

Developed at Stanford University, the evidence-based workshops have proven effective at hundreds of locations throughout the U.S. They provide people who are dealing with arthritis, diabetes, high blood pressure, anxiety, heart disease, and other conditions with real-world ideas and skills to help them deal with day-to-day issues such as:

  • Dealing with difficult emotions
  • Pain and fatigue management
  • Healthy eating
  • Medication usage
  • Communication skills
  • Working with your health care professional

LIVING WELL ALABAMA is funded by Top of Alabama Regional Council of Governments (TARCOG) Area Agency on Aging, through a grant from the Alabama Department of Senior Services.   There is no cost to the participants for the six week workshop that meets once per week, for 2 ½ hour sessions.

Taught by specially trained volunteer leaders, some who have health conditions themselves, the program covers a new topic each week and provides opportunities for interaction and group problem solving.  “We are really more like coaches,” says Carla Evans, a leader in Madison County’s LIVING WELL ALABAMA workshops.  “The answer to someone’s question is usually in the room.”

Most participants find that everyone has something to offer.  “The value of group discussion and realizing you have mutual situations is good”, says Lola, a Huntsville resident who attended a LIVING WELL ALABAMA workshop.
