Lady Gaga, Green Day and a reunited Soundgarden are expected to headline the 2010 Lollapalooza festival in Chicago.

Although promoters do not traditionally announce the lineup until spring, multiple industry sources have told The Daily Swarm that the three headliners are locked in for the Aug 6–8 weekend event. Three more headliners are expected to be included when the complete lineup is announced.

In years past, the Lollapalooza lineup has been officially unveiled in April, but consistently remains one of the music industry’s worst kept secrets. In 2008 and 2009, the Chicago Tribune’s Greg Kot correctly revealed the festival’s top bookings in early March. Jim DeRogatis of the Chicago Sun Times, a frequent critic of Lollapalooza and its artistic choices (‘musical Walmart on the lake’), notably broke the embargo on the full lineup in 2008, prompting festival figurehead Perry Farrell to name-call him “Pepe Le Pew.”

The biggest question hanging over the 2010 Lollapalooza lineup is whether or not the Arcade Fire will return as a triumphant headliner after a spirited and critically acclaimed performance at the festival’s inaugural Chicago weekend in 2005. The band is putting the finishing touches on its third album which is reportedly due out in the spring.

Lady Gaga will bring the new, arena-sized version of her Monster’s Ball tour – which is set to kick-off in Manchester, England later this week – to Grant Park in August, but it won’t be her first Lollapalooza appearance. A much less famous Gaga appeared as a brunette in 2007 with a side-stage, daylight time slot, dressed in knee-high fishnets and a disco ball bikini.

Greg Kot:

The Tribune has learned from its own sources that negotiations are progressing with Arcade Fire and the Strokes. The Lollapalooza lineup also will include several coveted rising bands, including Yeasayer, the xx, and Dirty Projectors, as well as veteran dance-oriented acts Cut Copy and Hot Chip, sources have confirmed.

In February and March the band is playing the southeastern United States before heading to South by Southwest in Austin. The tour begins in earnest in April with a northeast run, followed by the Midwest and the West Coast. Then comes European festivals, U.S. festivals like Lollapalooza in Chicago and Mile High in Denver, and then a return to Europe to headline clubs and theaters.

The Cribs:

The Cribs will also play Coachella, and the main stage at Lollapalooza.

Company Of Thieves:

I’ve sorta been working for Company of Thieves. They publicly confirmed they’ll be playing Lolla last night at their acoustic show at The Union (the North Central College church-turned-performance-space). The show was broadcast within a 35-mile range on WONC, North Central’s radio station. Gen was pretty confident they shouldn’t say anything, but Marc just did it. It got a pretty huge reaction from a tiny room. It’s out there now. They can get moved up.

X Japan:

X Japan drummer and band leader Yoshiki confirmed yesterday that they will play the main stage at the Lollapalooza rock festival in August. The event, at Grant Park in Chicago from August 6–8, will be the band’s first concert performance in the U.S. They recently spent over ¥500 million ($5.5 million) shooting some promotional videos in Hollywood, which in itself was something of a dream come true for Yoshiki.
