At the dawn of the 20th century, Carrère & Hastings, along with their mentors, McKim, Mead & White, were the most renowned and influential architectural designers in the U. S. During their 45 years of operation, Carrère & Hastings produced over 600 projects, among some of the best-known and most recognizable buildings of the era, such as New York Public Library, the Frick Collection, the Arlington Memorial Amphitheater, the Original House and Senate office buildings on Capitol Hill, and St. Augustine, Florida, Ponce de Leon hotel.

Carrère & Hastings, Architects, is the first thorough examination, analysis and visual record of the firm's many exceptional achievements. Volume I features a detailed biography of each of the principals, a history of the firm, and a thorough record of their urban design creations: grand hotels, theaters, civic and municipal structures, parks, monuments, elegant townhouses, and wide range of commercial buildings for corporations, retailers, and financial institutions.

Volume II features Carrère & Hastings' country house work, a field in which they were among the most influential designers of the era. Additional chapters focus on the firm's achievements as creators of churches, academic and institutional buildings, and exhibition pavilions for famed world's fairs.

The set includes a catalog of Carrère & Hastings' projects, a roster of the firm's members, and a comprehensive bibliography.

FROM THE PRESS

"The 11-pound, two-volume boxed set...seems to be the product of another era—an oevre complète to rival the early twentieth-century four-volume on McKim, Mead & White. The wide margins, heavy stock, and lihgt sheen of the paper that enhance the elegance of the gray-toned historical photographs all suggest that the work of Carrère & Hastings deserves to share the honors accorded their more celebrated contemporaries... the essays of the four authors are substantive...overall architectural quality and civic importance of Carrère & Hastings' work emerges clearly."
