Emerald City to build performance space for baby theater
Emerald City Theatre Company said Tuesday that it plans to build a custom-designed space that will allow it to produce theater for babies.
Named the Emerald City Playhouse, the new theater will be located at 2933 N. Southport Ave. Emerald City claims this will be the first performance space in America dedicated solely for audiences between zero and three years old.
Baby theater is hot at present — groups like Imagination Stage in Maryland and the Children's Theatre Company in Minneapolis have worked extensively in this area. Chicago Children's Theatre is currently presenting "Dot and Ziggy," a show for the very young, at the Victory Gardens Biograph Theatre.
Emerald City said its new theater will hold about 50 people (adults and children) and will feature some special amenities, including easy stroller parking and changing tables in the restrooms. The first show in the new theater is slated for May, 2012.
