Safest driving cities in the U.S.

Taking to the roads for the Labor Day weekend? You might feel safer in your travels knowing that Allstate Insurance Company released its seventh annual "Allstate America's Best Drivers Report" recently. The report ranks America's 200 largest cities in terms of car collision frequency to identify which cities have the safest drivers, according to Allstate claim data. The psychology of travel

Michael Brein says he created the notion of a "travel psychologist" while earning his psychology doctorate at the University of Hawaii, and it's not hard to believe. I haven't heard of another one.

Business Class: Navigating the airlines

Earlier this year I was stuck at an airport for 17 hours. In that span, American Airlines told me I would be on four different flights home, but I wound up on none for reasons that included weather, an overbooked plane, pilot fatigue and the mistake of an apologetic gate agent.

Free Wi-Fi can cost you

After oxygen, your wallet and cell phone, nothing is more vital to the business traveler than wireless Internet. It is our connection to work, home, fantasy sports teams and shopping. On the hotel, cafe or convention center networks, we flip through our online tasks with nary a care. But a care would be a good idea.

Gay market on the radar

A San Francisco-based market-research firm has released its annual gay and lesbian travel survey, and what caught my eye wasn't the leisure travel rankings, in which New York nudged past San Francisco for the top spot. It was the last category: top business travel destinations.

Delayed? Get creative

As any seasoned traveler knows — that's you, Mr. and Mrs. Business Traveler — the second-most maddening word at an airport, right after "canceled," is "delayed." We've all been there: stuck for hours at the gate (or worse, on the tarmac) because of lousy weather four states away.

Siphon off some joy from that work trip

Earlier this year I was talking to Fritz Maytag, longtime owner of San Francisco's Anchor Brewing, about traveling. Being at the forefront of the craft beer revolution for almost 50 years hadn't left much time for vacation. But it did make him creative.
