Sting to bring orchestra to Ravinia
If you’ve ever wondered how the Police’s “Roxanne” might sound with Sting singing over a symphony orchestra, your prayers have been answered. Live Nation will announce this week that Sting and the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra will tour North America this summer, including July 17-18 shows at Ravinia Festival in Highland Park, Ill.
Sting is scheduled to do a greatest hits set -- that means a mix of Police favorites (“Roxanne,” “Next To You,” “Every Little Thing She Does is Magic,” “Every Breath You Take”) and solo material (“Englishman in New York,” “Fragile,” “Russians,” “If I Ever Lose My Faith in You,” “Fields of Gold,” “Desert Rose”) – with the backing of the orchestra conducted by Steven Mercurio.
Sting credits a 2009 private concert with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for inspiring his latest plunge into neo-classical music. He’s not the first pop performer to perform with the 45-piece Royal Philharmonic, which has also collaborated with Burt Bacharach, George Benson, Michel Legrand, Diana Krall, Tina Turner and Randy Newman. The singer also will be joined by his own backing quartet, including guitarist Dominic Miller.
Tickets to the Ravinia concert go on sale April 22 at www.ravinia.org.
Other Sting orchestral dates: June 2 in Vancouver, June 9 in Denver and June 15 in Los Angeles, with additional concerts to be announced. For more information see www.sting.com or www.livenation.com.
