Ballet dancersWhen great artists mingle their talents, the possibilities are endless. The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts at UH is proving that. Funded by a $20 million grant from George and Cynthia Woods Mitchell, the center combines the forces of UH’s Creative Writing Program, Blaffer Art Museum at the University of Houston and Schools of Theatre & Dance, Music and Art.

Thanks to the center, Houstonians can enjoy unique public performances and lectures from renowned personalities. Students also benefit by learning from visiting artists. Among the performers and guest lecturers the center has brought to campus are composer Philip Glass, dancer Douglas Dunn, poet Anne Waldman and musician/artist Terry Allen.

Additionally, the center has united student artists from all disciplines to create unique and insightful works that have been displayed in public spaces and galleries.

“This center combines the university’s artistic energies to showcase works that are both challenging and engaging,” says Karen Farber, director of the center. “I believe collaboration is the key to innovation in the arts.”
