Pitzer College is a small liberal arts school in Claremont with 900-1,000 students. Obtaining 22 Fulbrights is impressive.

I was one of them in 2008. :-)

The prevalence of private institutions on this list is stunning when one considers their proportion of four year enrollments. Money talks very loudly apparently.

How are these numbers tallied? They do not match what institutions themselves report. For example, today's Univeristy of Michigan press release notes 39 Fulbrights (http://www.ur.umich.edu/update/archives/101026/fulbright) while Boston College reports 17 (http://www.bc.edu/publications/chronicle/TopstoriesNewFeatures/features/fulbrght072110.html).

Note that this list is for student grants, meaning only recent graduates with a BA or grad students who have not yet received a PhD may apply (there are a dozen other types of Fulbrights beyond this).

To the commenter who mentioned private institutions, that is the commentary on the fact that the top institutions in general in America tend to be private and tend to attract top students. What is actually impressive about this list are the ways universities defy their US News and World number.
