The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is always actively looking out for the interests of our members and promoting Hollywood. Here are a few of our activities from the past week:
The California Citizens Redistricting Commission released a draft last week of its proposed redistricting maps for the State’s new Assembly, Senate, Congressional and Board of Equalization boundaries. The Hollywood Chamber had written the commission urging that Hollywood be kept intact as part of the redistricting rather than be split among districts. It appears that has been achieved in proposed Congressional boundaries, but that portions of Hollywood were split off in proposed Senate and Assembly districts. The Commission encourages the public to provide input on the proposed district boundaries. Public comments about Communities of Interest can be submitted in a variety of ways, including:
The Commission was created by the Hollywood Chamber-supported “Voters First Act” approved by the voters for the Commission to draw Congressional, Assembly, State Senate districts. The 14-member independent Commission consists of individuals from diverse ethnic, geographic, and economic backgrounds. View the draft maps for Hollywood’s proposed redistricting.
As part of the Chamber’s on-going effort to support new developments in the Hollywood community, Chamber Vice President of Public Policy, Nicole Shahenian, recently testified in support of the 1601 Vine Street project which will provide Hollywood with an 8-story LEED Gold, Class A office building containing approximately 108,000 sq.ft. of leasable space. “There is a real need for new office space to be built in Hollywood. In fact, there has not been a new office building erected in the last 30 years with the exception of the new Technicolor building that was fully occupied by that firm. Additionally, this project will provide hundreds of new jobs to the Hollywood community, it’s time to move this project forward and put our people back to work! ” stated Shahenian. The 1601 Vine Street project was approved by the City’s Planning and Land Use Management (PLUM) Committee and is expected to be heard by the full City Council on June 15th. For further information on the Chamber's support of new developments in Hollywood, please contact Nicole Shahenian, Vice President of Public Policy at Nicole@hollywoodchamber.net. In a move that was hailed as good news for the entertainment industry, the California State Assembly passed a measure earlier this month that would extend the successful state film tax credits program for another five years. AB 1069, introduced by Assemblyman Felipe Fuentes, would continue the program beyond 2013-2014 when it is set to expire. California Film Commission Director Amy Lemisch told the Hollywood Chamber Board last month that unless there is an extension, the final tax credits will be given out in July 2012. The program sets aside $100-million annually to incentivize productions to remain in California. I t has been estimated that the program has already resulted in $2.2-billion in direction production spending in California, of which $728-million went directly to wages. More than 40 states have programs to draw filming from California. The Hollywood Chamber is a strong supporter of the film tax credit extensions. “We are encouraged that this bill passed the Assembly by a 72-1 vote,” said Chamber President & CEO Leron Gubler. “We know that it will be tougher once the bill reaches the Senate later this summer, but hopefully the momentum will help to secure passage there as well.” Hollywood Senator Curren Price, Jr. will be holding a Joint Committee on the Arts Hearing on the “Threat of Piracy to our Economy.” The event will take place on Friday, June 24th at Paramount Studios from 1:30 – 3:30 pm. RSVPs are required. All attendees must bring a government -issued photo ID to gain entrance and leave their name, contact number and/or email on the RSVP line.
