Summer Baseball: Marlborough splits doubleheader

Starting pitcher Mike Rizzelli pitched six innings, giving up one earned run while striking out three to lead Marlborough to a 10-1 victory in the second game after Post 132 dropped the first game 5-4 and split a doubleheader with Zone 4 foe Clinton.

Franklin baseball game postponed

Due to unplayable field conditions at Braintree, tonight's Division 1 South sectional baseball final between Franklin and Xaverian has been postponed.

Rain postpones local baseball games

Due to the steady rain that fell in the late morning and afternoon, the three Central baseball finals scheduled to be held at Tivnan Field yesterday were all postponed until tomorrow, although one will now change venue as well.

BMR's Buskey wins New England title

It was a bit closer than last week's rout, but Blackstone-Millville senior Brett Buskey picked up yet another win yesterday, as the Charger won the 100 meter dash at the New England Championship Meet in Burlington, Vermont. Buskey ran 10.91, edging Essex (Vt.) senior Michael DiMambro by 0.06 seconds for the win.

Overnight affair: Milford Softball suspended after eight innings

For the second time in three days, the Milford softball team had its game suspended. Two days after their Division 1 Central semifinal matchup with Shrewsbury stopped on Thursday due to poor weather, the Scarlet Hawks had their sectional final tilt with St. Peter-Marian stopped yesterday due to darkness.
The score is tied 2-2 after eight full innings.

Lacrosse: Dover-Sherborn boys head to Div. 3 state final

Jared Spence had five goals and three assists as top-seeded Dover-Sherborn routed No. 4 North Reading 19-6 in a Division 3 boys lacrosse semifinal.

Lincoln-Sudbury 17, Andover 9: The Warriors break new ground

For the first time in the history of the Lincoln-Sudbury girls lacrosse program, the Warriors can call themselves sectional champions. But the way they've have been playing during the playoffs, the Division 1 North title shouldn't come as much of a surprise.

Westborough 12, Algonquin 8: The Rangers win one for Dani

The Rangers were facing Mid-Wach A rival Algonquin for the third time this season, and beyond that, this time the Division 1 Central championship was on the line. But just in case their legs grew tired, or the pace of the game started to wear on them, all the Westborough players had to do was look at their wristbands and see the letters 'DIFD' for inspiration.

Algonquin 10, St. John's 9 (OT): Kraft-ing a Central crown

After making a save with three seconds remaining in regulation, Algonquin boys lacrosse goalie Kyle Stewart heaved the ball downfield, where a sprinting Conor Healey was waiting to receive his pass.

The parallels between the Hopkinton girls lacrosse team that took the field in yesterday's Division 2 South final and those of the past few years were striking.

Milford 6, Shrewsbury 5: Fantastic finish

The Milford softball team had a chance to rally in the sixth inning, but couldn't.  That doesn't matter anymore, as the top-seeded Scarlet Hawks got it done when it mattered the most - in the seventh.

Local Sports: Hillers advance to final

Michelle Cooprider allowed just one hit in the remaining 2 1/3 innings of play as second-seeded Hopkinton blanked sixth-seeded Fairhaven, 5-0, yesterday in the continuation of a Division 2 South semifinal softball game suspended on Thursday night.

West Bridgewater 13, Millis 5: Mohawks bow out

Millis wrote a fine story in this spring's postseason tournament. The 15th-seeded Mohawks scored stunning wins over No. 2 seed Marian and No. 10 Cape Cod Tech to roll into the sectional semifinals, but there was no happy ending for Millis yesterday in the face of a powerful and opportunistic West Bridgewater offense.

Schools: Hopkinton reaches final

Senior Jessie Hibel and junior Katy Cook won second doubles 6-1, 6-4 to claim the match-winning point and propel fourth-seed Hopkinton past top seed, and previously undefeated, Scituate, 4-1, in a Division 2 South semifinal yesterday.

The Milford softball team will find itself in an unusual position when it retakes the field this afternoon. The top-seeded Scarlet Hawks and fourth-seeded Shrewsbury had their Division 1 Central semifinal game suspended yesterday because of severe weather.

Sudbury's Ravenelle, Franklin's Leenhouts taken in Major League Baseball draft

In the 44th round of the MLB Draft (1,349th pick overall), the New York Yankees selected Adam Ravenelle, a senior pitcher from Lincoln-Sudbury. A round earlier, the Florida Marlins made a splash in Franklin when they selected former Panther and current Northeastern standour Andrew Leenhouts with the 1,303rd overall pick (43rd round).

Former Marlborough star Butler helps Binghamton win AHL's Calder Cup

Marlborough's Bobby Butler scored the tying goal in the third period for Binghamton and the Senators proceeded to defeat the host Houston Aeros 3-2 Tuesday night to win the American Hockey League's Calder Cup in six games.

Assabet 6, Hopedale 1: Aztecs headed to Central final

The top-seeded Assabet softball team executed its plan to near perfection, slap-hitting and bunting at the plate and playing solid defense in the field as it topped fifth-seed Hopedale 6-1. The Aztecs advance to tomorrow's Division 3 Central final against Quaboag (Noon), again at New Balance Field.

Hudson 4, Worcester Tech 2: Exclamation point

Center fielder Chris Tobin's sliding catch for the final out was the exclamation point on Hudson's masterful 4-2 win over Worcester Tech at Tivnan Field in a Division 2 Central semifinal.
