Offbeat Traveler: Metropol Parasol in Seville, Spain
A bizarre site in a medieval Spanish city, Metropol Parasol rises from Seville like an enormous honeycombed mushroom. If it conjures memories of popsicle-stick sculptures from your childhood, it's because the structure is built from pieces of timber glued to one another. Begun in 2004, Metropol Parasol made its debut in March in an effort to revitalize Plaza de la Encarnacรญon, a spot usually skipped in favor of more popular tourist destinations nearby.

Having had the good fortune of being able to be in Sevilla in the summer, I can testify that more shade is good.

It's amazing what an overhead structure can do in the creation of a 'space'. Wonderful!

Was in Seville this time last month. What a wonderful place. Now back in New Mexico. So different from Madrid or Barcelona. A must-see for visitors to Spain. And yes, the Metropol Parasol is intriguing and beautiful.
