Today's Poll Question

POLL: What is appropriate punishment for a child who abuses an animal?

A 12-year-old boy in Suffolk has been charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty after witnesses told police that he threw a kitten against a wall and then hit the kitten with a stick. Now that the kitten has subsequently died, the charge could become a felony. If the boy is convicted, what should the legal system do with him?

  • He needs counseling, not juvenile hall. This is a very young boy who is acting out violently. He doesn't know what he's doing, but it's not too late for him to change.
  • Lock him up until he's 21. This behavior goes beyond cruelty. It is truly frightening, and he needs to be punished and kept away from other kids.
  • Whatever is the best way to remove him from society. Sadistic animal abuse at a young age is often a precursor of much worse violence as the child ages.
  • We need to know more about his home life. If it is stable, he could be returned home and receive counseling. If it is a train wreck, he needs foster care and counseling.
