QB Tate Forcier changes mind, won't transfer to Miami

Former Michigan player Tate Forcier would have had to sit out a year at Miami

CORAL GABLES – Tate Forcier has decided not to transfer to Miami, after all.

The former Michigan quarterback, who signed a financial aid agreement with Miami in February after an official visit to campus, has informed the school he will not enroll for personal reasons, a University of Miami source said Friday.

A Hurricanes spokesman said Coach Al Golden would have no comment on the situation. Neither Forcier nor his family members immediately returned phone messages.

Forcier had planned on enrolling in June for the summer semester. He would have redshirted this coming season and competed for the Hurricanes' starting job in 2012 with two years of eligibility left.

School officials announced May 6 that another quarterback, Ryan Williams, had transferred to Miami. According to the UM source, the program knew of Forcier's change of heart for some time before getting Williams, who started the final 10 games at Memphis as a true freshman last season.

Prior to Williams' addition, it was expected that Forcier would battle Stephen Morris for the starting job next year. The Hurricanes also have oral commitments from two quarterbacks — Clearwater Countryside's Gray Crow and Miami Westminster Christian's David Thompson — for their 2012 signing class.

It's unclear what Forcier will do at this point. He had also considered Washington, Arizona, Kansas State and Montana after announcing on Twitter in January that he was leaving Michigan after two seasons, but committed to Miami on the day his campus visit concluded and cancelled all other trips.

"Miami had the best opportunity," Forcier told ESPN at the time. "There is so much positive energy around this program and I really want to be a part of it. I love these coaches and feel like they are the right guys for me. I had a great visit and I really want to be a part of the rebirth at Miami."

Forcier also told CaneSport.com, "Not too many people get a second chance at a program like this."

Forcier started every game as a true freshman in 2009, and completed 165 of 281 passes for 2,050 yards, with 13 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He also rushed for 240 yards and three touchdowns. He lost the starting job to Denard Robinson before the start of last season, but still saw action in eight games and completed 54 of 84 passes for 597 yards with four touchdowns and four interceptions. He was academically ineligible for Michigan's bowl game.
