Fishing report

LAKE OKEECHOBEE

Bass 2-4 pounds were biting topwater plugs, jerkbaits, stick worms and lipless crankbaits in the Clewiston channel and crankbaits, 10-inch worms and shaky head jigs in the rim canal. Bigger bass were biting swimbaits and 10-inch worms around reefs in the main lake, but you have to know where you're going with the lake level at 10.05 feet. Bluegills were biting crickets and Beetle-Spins in the rim canal.

EVERGLADES/FRESHWATER

Big bass were biting plastic worms and swimbaits at Sawgrass Recreation Park and the STA 3/4 Recreation Area. Bass at Lake Ida were biting Rat-L-Traps and shaky head jigs.

SOUTH FLORIDA INSHORE

Tarpon up to 160 pounds were biting live crabs at Government Cut. Lots of sea trout were biting popping corks with Berkley Gulp! baits in Florida Bay.

SOUTH FLORIDA OFFSHORE

Capt. Skip Dana of the Helen S and Fish City Pride drift boats in Pompano Beach said morning trips this week produced kingfish up to 43 pounds, blackfin tunas up to 37 pounds and dolphin up to 25 pounds. Afternoon trips were averaging 10-12 kings and 30-40 mutton and yellowtail snappers. Night trips had lots of yellowtails before dark and near limits of kingfish. The kings were biting in 100-160 feet and snappers were in 60-110 feet from Hillsboro Inlet to Pompano Pier.

Capt. Bouncer Smith had three dolphin 25-28 pounds, nine dolphin 6-15 pounds, a sailfish, a kingfish and lots of bonitos Wednesday kite-fishing in 200-300 feet from Key Biscayne to Miami Beach. On Thursday he had only kingfish, but lots of them, kite-fishing in 250 feet.

PIERS

Dania Beach had some bluefish and mangrove snappers at night and some Spanish mackerel and blue runners during the day. Pompano had some barracudas. Deerfield had some mackerel, blue runners and a couple of snappers and kingfish. Lake Worth had some jacks and blue runners. Juno had some pompano, whiting, croakers, snook and mackerel.

THE KEYS

Capt. George Clark, of Key Largo, said lots of dolphin were biting in 450-500 feet and mutton snappers and black groupers were biting on the reefs.
