houston's new morning show is a real eye opener

Snooze bars throughout the largest city in Texas are about to get a much needed rest. Houston's KIAH launches a new two-hour morning show next week that promises to be anything but predictable. Hosted by a Second City Conservatory grad, a WGN Morning News writing alum and a former Hawaiian Punch pitch man, with local coverage provided by Houston's own Mia Grandy, Eye Opener rounds out its ensemble cast with colorful, entertaining and informative regulars like Bohuš, the gadget guru, and shirtless handyman, Wrench. The show kicks off at six a.m., Monday, May 9th.

When it comes to being recognized for excellence in journalism, the gold standard for any newspaper is earning a Pulitzer. Striking gold twice: the LA Times. For its exposure and ongoing coverage of fraud in Bell, Ca.'s city hall, the paper received one of journalism's highest honors -- the Pulitzer for Public Service. And through a series reflecting the devastating effects of gang violence on innocent lives caught in the crossfire, Barbara Davidson topped the Feature Photography category.

times draws investigative ire

Exposing greed in one of California's poorest communities earned the Los Angeles Times top honors from Investigative Reporters and Editors Inc, a non-profit group dedicated to improving investigative journalism. In a series of articles spanning five months and involving 11 reporters, the Times uncovered exorbitant spending and illegal taxes being imposed on Bell, Ca's 39,000 residents. Times' coverage resulted in resignations, arrests and refunds totaling nearly $3 million.

Local Emmy voters in the largest TV market in America recently validated what we've known for some time... that PIX11 is home to a mighty fine newsroom and their promo dept. churns out some damn good creative. The station brought home ten of the coveted awards last week, including Best On-Air Talent, Best Writer (for commentary/editorial), Best Teen News and a handful of Bests for programming and news promos.
