Top weekend shows: Mister Heavenly, Freddie Gibbs, Handsome Furs
Mister Heavenly: Sub Pop’s latest signing is this highly touted indie all-star group, which unites Man Man's Honus Honus, Islands/Unicorns member Nick Diamonds, Modest Mouse percussionist Joe Plummer and occasionally actor Michael Cera. Their sound? "Doom-wop," a clever combination of doo-wop and doomed love narratives, 9 p.m. Friday at Lincoln Hall, 2424 N. Lincoln Av., $15; lincolnhallchicago.com.
Freddie Gibbs: Though he’s now based on the West Coast, Gibbs developed his vivid street tales while growing up in Gary, Ind., and has become one of hip-hop’s most distinctive new voices, 9 p.m. Friday at Metro, 3730 N. Clark St., $15; etix.com.
Handsome Furs: With Wolf Parade on hiatus, Dan Boeckner gets to spend more time with his wife, Alexei Perry, in this thumping electro-punk duo. The minimalist structures and harsh beats underpin hooky pop tunes, 9 p.m. Saturday at Lincoln Hall, 2424 N. Lincoln Av., $15; etix.com.
