This has absolutely nothing to do with the story. I just really like it. Doug Neely flashing some retro-style thigh. Ow ow. (Photo courtesy of the Baltimore Blast)
Yeah, that’s right. I’m back and better than ever.
This of course, is a lie. I’m really just back.
But you know what will be back and better than ever come fall? The MISL. At least that’s the plan.
OK, that’s probably always the plan. But here’s why it’s going to be different for the 2011-2012 season. (Provided the world doesn’t end Saturday like I keep hearing it will…but come on, would Jesus really want to join us for Preakness? The running of the port-a-potties isn’t exactly Judgment Day material, you feel me?)
Next season is going to be different because today the MISL announced that they have entered into an agreement with the United Soccer Leagues, which run the outdoor teams that many of your beloved Blast players join during the summer months.
At this time, I cannot confirm whether David Grimaldi will remain MISL commissioner (to be continued).
BUT ANYWAY, Baltimore will be joined by perennial rival Milwaukee as well as Kansas City, Wichita, and first-year teams Rochester, Syracuse and Norfolk (geographical rivalry, anyone?). More teams are set to be announced soon.
This is exciting for a number of reasons.
First, folding into a larger organization like the USL implies greater financial viability, but to be honest, I never really pretended to know anything about business dealings and such, so that’s mostly a guess. Secondly, this seems to be a step forward in addressing the problem of the division and isolation of different factions of American soccer. A joining of forces can be nothing but progress.
Finally, more teams mean more games, son! Get ready.
No I don’t mean you, the fans. I know ya’ll are ready. That’s for the players. Think you were tired before? Ha.
