    A sampling of seminars, fundraisers and concerts in Carroll County.


    Sunday 05-15

    Iron will - Blacksmith Days at the Carroll County Farm Museum, 500 S. Center St., Westminster, concludes 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Blacksmiths from several states will demonstrate skills.     Masterworks concert - Masterworks Chorale of Carroll County will host its spring concert, 7-9 p.m. in the Baker Memorial Chapel at McDaniel College, 2 College Hill, Westminster. The chorale is an 80-member choir directed by Dr. Margaret Boudreaux, and will perform Haydn's "Creation" with the Columbia Symphony Orchestra. Cost is $12, or $10 in advance. Students free.     Monday 05-16

    Storytime Susan - Eldersburg Library, 6400 Hemlock Drive, Eldersburg, will host the Black-Eyed Susan Book Award Celebration at 7 p.m., for all ages. The celebration encourages children to read contemporary literature, then vote on their favorites. A storytime will feature picture books nominated for the Black-Eyed Susan award, read by local school media specialists. Other activities include planting your own Black-Eyed Susan seed, crafts and face painting. Refreshments will be served. 410-386-4460.

    Tuesday 05-17

    Voices and jazz - The Jazz Choir and Combo at Carroll Community College will perform at 7:30 p.m. in concert at the campus' Scott Center Theater, 1601 Washington Road, Westminster. Free. Call 410-386-8575.

    Carroll Singers - The Carroll Singers will perform "Hooray for Hollywood," at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster High School, Hook Road at Washington Road (Route 32), Westminster. Tickets are $8 advance; $10 at the door. Student tickets $5 in advance; $7 at the door. Children younger than 6 free. Advance tickets are available at the Carroll Arts Center, Coffey Music, Stu's Music Shop and from choir members.

    Wednesday 05-18

    Main market -  The Mount Airy Main Street Farmers Market will be 3:30-6:30 p.m. on the municipal parking lot, corner of Center and Main streets, Mount Airy. Fresh produce, baked goods, honey, eggs, crafts and entertainment. 410-829-1983 or mountairymainstreet.org

    Rock Ensemble - Carroll Community College's rock ensemble will perform in a free concert at 7:30 p.m. in the Scott Center Theater on campus, Washington Road, Westminster. 410-386-8575 or www.carrollcc.edu.

    Thursday 05-19

    Big Truck Night - The Carroll County Public Schools Judy Center Partnership will sponsor its second annual Big Truck Night, 6-7 p.m., at the Carroll County Career and Technology Center, 1229 Washington Road, Westminster. Vehicles including a fire truck, tow truck, school bus, Ravens van, dump truck, cement mixer, police car and others will be on display. Light snacks provided. 410-751-3282 or 410-751-3613.

    'Tea' music - The Woods Tea Company, an acoustic group performing Celtic tunes, novelty, French-Canadian and American folk songs, will perform at 8 p.m. at Baldwin's Station, 7618 Main St., Sykesville. Cost is $17. 410-795-1041.

    Friday 05-20

    Coffey and jam - Coffey Music, 31 E. Main St., Westminster, will host an open Bluegrass Jam at 7 p.m. Free. Pickers, grinners and listeners are welcome. An upright bass is available for anyone to use.

    Whodunnit mystery - Friends of the Village will host the Whodunnit Mystery Dinner Theater, in Krug Chapel and auditorium on the campus of Carroll Lutheran Village, St. Luke Circle, Westminster, today and Saturday, May 21 at 7 p.m. each night Cost of $40 includes dinner and the show. slferguson@verizon.net.

    International 'Love' - Film Lovers in Carroll County will host a screening of the Italian film, "I Am Love," at 7:30 p.m. at the Carroll Arts Center, 91 W. Main St., Westminster. Rated R.     Saturday 05-21

    Farm fresh - The Hampstead Farmers Market will be open 8 a.m.-noon, at the grounds of the Hampstead Fire Department, 1341 N. Main St., Hampstead. 410-239-8110 or www.townofhampstead.us.

    Hampstead trains - The Hampstead Model Train Layout will be on display 9 a.m.-4 p.m., at the Hampstead Train Station, 4035 Gill Ave., Hampstead. 410-374-9397. Also today is the annual Hampstead Day (see page 6).

    Winfield fair - Winfield Elementary School, 4401 Salem Bottom Road, Westminster, will host its spring fair 11 a.m.-3 p.m. 410-751-3242.

    Taneytown fest - Taneytown's Swing Into Spring festival will be held 9 a.m.-3 p.m., at the Taneytown Memorial Park, 56 Memorial Park Dr., Taneytown. Crafts, vendors, children's activities, home and garden ideas, music and food. 410-751-1100 or www.taneytown.org

    'Summer' screening - The movie "Summer Magic," will be shown as part of Family Movie Time at 2 p.m. at the Westminster Library, 50 E. Main St., Westminster. Bring snacks and beverages. Free, but children age 3 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

    Big Band Bash - The Blue Moon Big Band and Big Band Caliente will perform at 3 p.m., at the Carroll Arts Center, 91 W. Main St., Westminster. Two "double header" features big band sounds of the 1930s, '40s and '50s, from jazz and swing to red-hot Latin sounds. Tickets $20 adults, $18 for arts council members, students and seniors. Ticket holders receive 10 percent off a meal at Harry's Main Street Grille or Rafael's, both on Main Street, after the concert. 410-848-7272 or www.carrollcountyartscouncil.org.

    Sunday 05-22

    Piney Run hike -  A hike to the dam will take place 1-3 p.m. at Piney Run Nature Center, 30 Martz Road, Sykesville. Put on your hiking boots to explore the undeveloped end of the lake. Dress for the weather and bring a water bottle. For ages 8 and older. Fee is $5. 410-795-6043.

    Monday 05-23

    Twice as 'Harry' - Taneytown Library, 10 Grand Drive, Taneytown, will host a screening of the films, "Harry the Dirty Dog" and "No Roses for Harry!" at 10:30 a.m., as part of its Preschool Movie and Munchies series, for youngsters age 3 and younger. Head to the library for movies, snacks and playtime with friends. Children 3 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Siblings welcome. Refreshments served.

    Tuesday 05-24

    Songs of romance - Author David Lehman will be at the Eldersburg Library, 6400 Hemlock Drive, at 7 p.m., for a discussion of his book, "A Fine Romance: Jewish Songwriters, American Songs." The book discusses the lives and works of Irving Berlin, George and Ira Gershwin, Harold Arlen, and others.
