Mother's Day is next Sunday and the pressure is on - if you haven't already thought of a gift for mom, it's time to get moving. If you're looking for hints, something from the world of style can be a real treat for time-crunched moms who often can't find time to shop for themselves.
"A fashion gift is always a great gift. If you're thinking of buying your mom clothing, start by taking a peek into your mom's closet to be sure of her size. Be sure to keep the person in mind while shopping and look for something that you think she'll really like," says Meredith Paley, VP of public relations for Talbots.
Listening to what mom says and looking at what she already wears will also provide clues as to what she might appreciate.
"Your mom already knows what silhouettes and colours look best on her, so you should pay attention to what she already has. But the best gifts are surprises, so try to get something that looks new to her - something fresh and unexpected," recommends New York-based fashion designer Nicole Miller.
Gifts that mom is likely to wear often include both cropped and long boyfriend style cardigans made of cozy cotton or soft silk. Bright colours such as orange and pink make stylish statements, as can designer-inspired details such as ruffled trim, fancy buttons and floral or animal prints.
"We all want to get mom something special. A gift of clothing can help to establish an emotional connection with mom, who will remember that you gave it to her each time she wears it," says Lara Smith, a Calgary-based ladies wear manager at Mark's.
Cargo-inspired leggings, tee shirts, pyjamas and new jeans are among the other many possible gift ideas for mom.
If you're not quite certain of mom's sizes or of what type of clothing to buy for her, consider accessories such as belts and bags.
"Printed wallets, fun coloured clutches and cross-body handbags are all great gifts," says Miller.
Scarves and shoes are among the many other possible gift ideas.
"Long scarves are always in style and easy to buy as they're not tied to size - and what woman wouldn't love another pair of shoes? If you're buying shoes, I'd recommend a pair of feminine kitten-heeled pumps, or perhaps a pair of flip flops adorned with something whimsical and of-the-moment, such as jewelled insects" says Paley.
Stylish moms who enjoy reading may enjoy the gift of a recent book about fashion or a subscription to a favourite magazine. And don't forget about the traditional gifts - jewelry, cosmetics and fragrances are tried and true, and can make mom feel like a million bucks.
