Bourbon Steak bartender shows how to make mint juleps


Bourbon Steak Miami will open at 5 p.m. Saturday for the running of the Kentucky Derby.

Half priced mint juleps—$5 each on Saturday—will be featured at the chic bar where the race will be shown on the flat screen.

Two steakhouse wine events


steakhousewine.jpg 6:30-8 p.m., Wednesday, May 18, Morton’s The Steakhouse Miami Beach, 4041 Collins Ave., Miami Beach Chad Lipson, Certified Sommelier and general manager of presents an evening dedicated to cabernet. Lipson will provides an overview of proper wine etiquette and terminology and suggests food pairings. Before the presentation, guests will sample wines and be served such Morton’s signature hors d'oeuvres as smoke salmon canapé, chicken goujonettes and filet mignon sandwiches. Each guest leaves with a certificate of course completion. Cost: $49 per person Reservations: 786-454-4022 7 p.m., Thursday, May 26, Ruth’s Chris Steak House, 2525 N. Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale Dan Cohn, son of BR Cohn winery founder Bruce Cohn, is in town for one night only from Sonoma Valley winery for a four-course wine dinner. The menu: blackened ahi tuna salad, spicy lobster appetizer, filet with crab cake Oscar-style and a dessert duo of chocolate mousse and berries with cream. Cohn will talk about and pour four different wines. Cost: $70 per person Reservations: 954-565-2338

Broward Beekeepers at Slow Food Miami documentary screening

Slow Food Miami hosts a Wednesday screening in Coral Gables of “Vanishing of the Bees,” a documentary about the collapse of the honeybee population and the impact on our food supply.

Following the screening, Maryam Henein, who directed the film, and John Herring of Broward Beekeepers Association will take questions form the audience.

Free champagne will be served and Slow Food snacks from local growers and chefs will be available for purchase.

Showtime is 6:30 p.m. Admission is $14. Coral Gables Art Cinema is at 260 Aragon Ave., Coral Gables.

Shaq stops by Cafe Martorano

Shaquille O'Neal stopped by Café Martorano in Fort Lauderdale Saturday night with Nicole “Hoopz” Alexander.

The Boston Celtics star and his gal pal sampled macaroni and cheese, Lobster Francaise, lamb Bolognese, meatball sliders and crispy shrimp pizza.

Shaq, who once gave Chef Steve Martorano a championship ring for his birthday, was presented with an advance copy of the chef’s cookbook. “Yo Cuz! My Life My Food My Way” is set for release this week.




Fort Lauderdale's Burger Battle May 13

Fort Lauderdale’s second annual Burger Battle is set for 7-10 p.m. Friday, May 13.

Your $40 prepaid ticket gets you burgers from 15 competing local restaurants, samples from the french fry bar and three drink tickets. Sponsors Publix Apron’s Cooking School and Krystal will also offer samples.

It’s a fundraiser for Riverwalk Trust, whose mission is to build community along the New River. Guests will vote on their favorite, listen to live music and watch a celebrity slider eating contest sponsored by Krystal.

Last year, the burger from Georgie's Alibi in Wilton Manors was the judges’ favorite while Capital Grille was the fan favorite.

Here's the list of participating restaurants: Capital Grille, Morton’s The Steakhouse, ROK:BRGR, Gilbert’s 17th Street Grill, Johnny V Restaurant, Big City Tavern, Pelican Landing at Pier Sixty-Six Marina, Chef Allen’s Burger Bar, Riverside Hotel, Tarpon Bend, Timpano Chophouse & Martini Bar, Blue Plate at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Rare Las Olas, Hard Rock Café and Georgie’s Alibi.

VIPs, who pay $125 per ticket or $1,000 for 10 tickets, get an open bar, table service and gift bags.
