Art Nouveau (French for "new art") took fine art from the austere to the everyday, from the esoteric to the practical. At the turn of the 20th century the Industrial Revolution was old hat, and many artists sought new ways to portray a more modern age and perspective where all forms of art worked together in harmony.
Theophile Steinlen, Alphonse Mucha, and Gustav Klimt were among the better-known artists who embraced this new international style. Art Nouveau pieces were not restricted to framed paintings, magazine covers, posters and prints. Designers incorporated this style in glass and ceramics, jewelry, and architecture. More than one hundred years later, it is still popular and it continues to play a role in all forms of art around the world.
