  • How the Fed Bailed Out Super-rich Bankers' Wives (Sit-down with Eliot Spitzer)
    April 22, 9:58 AM ET
    | Matt Taibbi

I had a fun sit-down with Eliot Spitzer last night to talk about the "Housewives" story -- he's probably my favorite interview on the finance stuff because he knows this material so well, and always has interesting things to add. In any case, here's the video from last night's appearance: | More »

  • Best Way to Raise Campaign Money? Investigate Banks
    April 21, 9:27 AM ET
    | Matt Taibbi

A hilarious report has come out courtesy of the National Institute of Money in State Politics, showing that Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller – who is coordinating the investigation into the banks’ improper mortgage dealings – increased his campaign contributions from the finance sector this year by a factor of 88! He has raised $261,445 from finance, insurance and real estate contributors since he announced that he was going to be coordinating the investigation into improper foreclosure practices. That is 88 times as much as they gave him not over last year, but over the previous decade. | More »

  • Talking 'Real Housewives of Wall Street' on Imus
    April 14, 11:44 AM ET
    | Matt Taibbi

Wanted to post the video from my visit with Don Imus this morning, in which we talk about the “Real Housewives of Wall Street” story. The one piece of information in this interview that will be new, to those who’ve already read the piece, is that along with Christy Mack, Susan Karches, Wayne Huizenga, John Paulson, and the Arab Bank of Bahrain, there is another interesting name on the list of Fed loan recipients: Kenneth H. Dahlberg. Dahlberg, for those of you who’ve seen the movie All The President’s Men, was the Minnesota chair of Nixon’s Committee to Re-Elect the President, whose check to CREEP ended up in the account of one of the Watergate Burglars. | More »

  • Mailbag: Republicans Are Only Too Happy To Spend -- On the Rich
    April 13, 12:14 PM ET
    | Matt Taibbi

I received a letter yesterday in response to our new "Real Housewives of Wall Street" article that I thought was worth responding to publicly. I got a number of strange letters yesterday in fact (though most were funny -- one just read "guillotine time muthafuckaz!" in the subject line and nothing else), with a number of comments that suggested some elements in the story were unclear. | More »

  • Tax Cuts for the Rich on the Backs of the Middle Class; or, Paul Ryan Has Balls
    April 7, 11:52 AM ET
    | Matt Taibbi

Paul Ryan, the Republican Party’s latest entrant in the seemingly endless series of young, prickish, over-coiffed, anal-retentive deficit Robespierres they’ve sent to the political center stage in the last decade or so, has come out with his new budget plan. All of these smug little jerks look alike to me – from Ralph Reed to Eric Cantor to Jeb Hensarling to Rand Paul and now to Ryan, they all look like overgrown kids who got nipple-twisted in the halls in high school, worked as Applebee’s shift managers in college, and are now taking revenge on the world as grownups by defunding hospice care and student loans and Sesame Street. They all look like they sleep with their ties on, and keep their feet in dress socks when doing their bi-monthly duty with their wives. | More »

  • Jefferson County, Alabama: Screwed By Wall Street, Still Paying
    April 7, 11:47 AM ET
    | Matt Taibbi

The good times just keep coming for Jefferson County, Alabama. Last year I did a story for Rolling Stone about Wall Street's sacking of the Birmingham, Alabama region -- the city was roped into a series of deadly swap deals by a number of banks, most notably JP Morgan Chase, that left the county billions of dollars in debt. | More »
