la picks up pair of pulitzers

When it comes to being recognized for excellence in journalism, the gold standard for any newspaper is earning a Pulitzer. Striking gold twice: the LA Times. For its exposure and ongoing coverage of fraud in Bell, Ca.'s city hall, the paper received one of journalism's highest honors -- the Pulitzer for Public Service. And through a series reflecting the devastating effects of gang violence on innocent lives caught in the crossfire, Barbara Davidson topped the Feature Photography category.

times draws investigative ire

Exposing greed in one of California's poorest communities earned the Los Angeles Times top honors from Investigative Reporters and Editors Inc, a non-profit group dedicated to improving investigative journalism. In a series of articles spanning five months and involving 11 reporters, the Times uncovered exorbitant spending and illegal taxes being imposed on Bell, Ca's 39,000 residents. Times' coverage resulted in resignations, arrests and refunds totaling nearly $3 million.

emmys, emmys everywhere

Local Emmy voters in the largest TV market in America recently validated what we've known for some time... that PIX11 is home to a mighty fine newsroom and their promo dept. churns out some damn good creative. The station brought home ten of the coveted awards last week, including Best On-Air Talent, Best Writer (for commentary/editorial), Best Teen News and a handful of Bests for programming and news promos.

readers engaged in crime

If you have any doubts that newspaper readers engage with print ads, look no further than the numbers posted by the Wanted ads -- that's Wanted, as in criminals and suspects, not jobs or classifieds -- running in the Daily Press. We're talking a 90% increase in arrests, 26% increase in calls to law enforcement and 96% increase in bounties for tips leading to arrests. The ads have worked so well that the Newport News PD recognized the paper with a Chief's Award at a recent ceremony.

Lauderdale (Fla) and the Sun Sentinel marked their 100th trip around the sun together this week. While the staff enjoyed cake, readers were treated to a slew of memories and well wishes for more to come.
