Industry encroaches on battlefields

As history buffs begin four years of events marking the 150th anniversary of a conflict that continues to resonate in American politics and culture, the land over which blue- and gray-clad soldiers bled and died is coming into increasing conflict with modern society. In Maryland, the Monocacy and South Mountain battlefields face development pressures from energy projects. Above, Susan W. As far as family members know, Phylicia Barnes had never traveled to the area around the Conowingo Dam, where her body was discovered last week after a long and frustrating search that began when the teen disappeared four months ago while visiting family in Baltimore. Bryan Barnes, inset, the teen's 23-year-old half brother, said he's hopeful police will make an arrest soon in connection with her death.
