    Sunday 04-24

    Sunrise services -- Several local churches will host sunrise services on Easter: * A sunrise service will be held at 5:45 a.m. in the pavilion at Deer Park United Methodist Church, 2205 Sykesville Road, Smallwood. 410-848-2313. * Mayberry First Church of God, 2428 Mayberry Road, Westminster, will host sunrise service, 6:30 a.m., with a breakfast to follow. * Ebenezer United Methodist Church, 4901 Woodbine Road, Winfield, will host sunrise service at 6:30 a.m. 410-795-6136 * Faith Lutheran Church, 1700 St. Andrews Way, Eldersburg, will have sunrise service at 6:30 a.m. on the lawn. 410-795-8082.

    Monday 04-25

    Celebrate Earth - The annual Earth Day celebration at Carroll Community College, 1601 Washington Road, Westminster, will be held 9 a.m.-7 p.m., with many events in the college's Great Hall. Activities, demonstrations and displays will include chemical analyses of tap water, hands-on experiments, free seedlings and other giveaways, hybrid cars on display, representatives from groups such as the Sierra Club and a speaker from Chesapeake Climate Action Network. Then, at 7 p.m., a screening of the documentary film, "Winged Migration," will be held in Room K-100.

    Chocolate delights -  Death by Chocolate is a program being held in two sessions at Taneytown Library, 10 Grand Drive. At 1 p.m., ages 7-12 can taste-test various chocolates and make some of our own. Then, at 3 p.m., a similar program will be held for ages 13-17. Some products may contain nuts. Call 410-386-4488.

    Use the force - Mount Airy Library, 705 Ridge Ave., will host a "Star Wars" Celebration, 2-4 p.m., for all ages. Dress as a favorite character. Refreshments will be served. 410-386-4470.

    Tuesday 04-26

    Reptile rapture -  Scales and Tales: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, will be held at 1 p.m. at the North Carroll Library, 2255 Hanover Pike, Greenmount, for ages 3 and older. Reptiles and birds demonstrate how we often judge an animal's value by the way it looks. Learn that all wildlife serves a purpose in nature. 410-386-4488.

    Wednesday 04-27

    Pinhole creations -  Eldersburg Library, 6400 W. Hemlock Drive, Eldersburg, will celebrate World Pinhole Day with a project to make a pinhole camera, 7 p.m., for ages 16 and older. Learn about a basic form of analog photography, the pinhole camera and create your own out of recycled materials. Please bring one roll of 35mm film, all other materials will be provided.     Thursday 04-28

    Evening of rhyme - One Tree Productions will host Thursday Evening Poetry at the Carroll Arts Center, 91 W. Main St., Westminster, 6:30-8 p.m. Featured poets include Crickit René and Cassandra Akeley. Free. Call 410-848-7272.

    Friday 04-29

    Millers sale and auction - Millers United Methodist Church, 4224 Millers Station Road, Manchester, will host its semi-annual yard sale, bake sale and silent auction, 8 a.m.-3 p.m.; and Saturday, 7 a.m.-2 p.m. 410-374-2774.

    String fever - Finksburg Library, 2265 Old Westminster Pike, Finksburg, will host the program, "Do You Know What a String Quartet Is?" at 10 a.m. The Carroll County String Project will perform a free mini-concert for ages 3-6, and will teach about the instruments. Free.

    Union Mills in bloom - Union Mills Homestead, 3311 Littlestown Pike, Union Mills, will host its 42nd annual Flower and Plant Market, noon-4 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.; and Sunday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. An array of annuals, perennials, vegetables, hanging baskets and small shrubs will be available, and Carroll County master gardeners will be on hand to answer questions. There will be children's activities, presentations and workshops, guided tours of the Historic Shriver Homestead and Grist Mill, food and more. 410-848-2288 or www.carr.org/tourism.

    Saturday 04-30

    Classic 'Velvet' - The film, "National Velvet" will be shown as part of Family Movie Time at the Westminster Library, 50 E. Main St., Westminster, at 2 p.m. Bring snacks and beverages, and relax. Children age 3 and younger must be accompanied by an adult.

    Outdoor sale -  First Church of God of Westminster will host an outdoor community yard sale, 8 a.m.-2 p.m. on North Center Street. Vendor spaces available for $10. 443-974-6349.

    Clean start - Junior and high school youth of Faith Lutheran Church, Eldersburg will hold a car wash at the Arby's, at Liberty Road and Georgetown Boulevard. Funds benefit the church's support of Compassion International Ministries from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. 410-795-8082 or www.faithlutheraneldersburg.com.

    Tea time - The Ladies Auxiliary of the Westminster Rescue Mission will host an English Garden Tea, 10:30 a.m., 658 Lucabaugh Mill Road, Westminster. Food and teas will be served. Also a silent auction, door prizes and music, with guest speaker Dr. Elizabeth Foy, of the Hedges and Hyways Ministries. Tickets $20. 410-848-8149.

    Chapel voices - McDaniel College will present a concert with its College Choir at 3 p.m. in Big Baker Chapel on campus, 2 College Hill, Westminster. Free.

    Catfish hunters - Piney Run Park, 30 Martz Road, Sykesville, will host its fifth annual Catfish Shootout, 4-10 p.m. Entry is $15 per angler. Vehicle entrance fees are waived for participants. Private boat launch fee of $8. A limited number of row boats available to rent on a reservation-only basis for $20. 410-795-5165 or www.pineyrunpark.org.

    Shores of Hashawha - Lake Hashawha, at Bear Branch Nature Center, 300 John Owings Road, Westminster, will host a canoe and campfire event from 6-8 p.m. Enjoy a paddle on the calm waters of Lake Hashawha as the sun sets, then roast hot dogs and marshmallows over the campfire. Great for beginners. All gear included. For ages 8 and older, though those younger than 16 must be with a paying adult. Cost is $10. 410-386-3580.

    Sunday 05-01

    Quest for spring -  Charlotte's Quest Nature Center, Wilhelm Lane, Manchester, will host its Spring Fest on Sunday, beginning at noon. Admission is free, but there is a small charge for crafts, games and food. Also the new Kids Corral, exhibits, demonstrations and more. www.charlottesquestnaturecenter.com.

    Mandolin magic - The Baltimore Mandolin Orchestra will perform Sunday, 3 p.m., at Westminster High School, 1225 Washington Road, Westminster, in a concert sponsored by the Community Concert Association. Under the directorship of David Evans, this is a Maryland-based ensemble of mandolins, mandolas, mandocellos, mandobasses and classical guitars, playing a mix of classical music, show tunes, marches and rags.     Monday 05-02

    Beach bound - Eldersburg Library, 6400 W. Hemlock Drive, Eldersburg, will host Beach Bound Beading, Monday, 6:30-8:30 p.m., for ages 15 to adult. Use polymer clay and rubber stamps to create a unique necklace. Eyelash yarn will be used to compliment the bead design. Supplies provided by SeaStar Designs.

    Tuesday 05-03

    Cinco de Mayo - Finksburg Library, 2265 Old Westminster Pike, Finksburg, will celebrate Cinco de Mayo on Tuesday with a bilingual fiesta at 6 p.m., for all ages. Food, music and piñatas. Refreshments will be served.

    Cult classic - The film, "Gremlins," will be shown at Taneytown Library, 10 Grand Drive, Taneytown, for ages 13 to adult. Part of Cult Classic Movie Night. Refreshments will be served.
