Microsoft’s Bing search engine is now responsible for 30 percent of all online searches, says market research firm Experian Hitwise.
Based on Internet search results from March 2011, the service has grown in popularity by 5 percent, bringing it closer to giving Google, which controls roughly 65 percent of the market, a run for its Web addresses. Credit in large part can be given to a partnership with Yahoo's sites, which use Bing.com’s online search technology.
Bing’s overall track record for successful searches that led to actual website visits is also reputedly higher than Google’s, with success rates for correct responses pegged at 81 percent and 66 percent, respectively.
Despite a steady downswing in Google’s popularity for online searches in 2011, it remains to be proven whether this is enough to persuade Internet users to switch en masse, though.
