Airport Control Tower

Tower pictureThe Taipei Aerodrome Control Tower is located at the geographical center of Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, with a height of 240.3 feet MSL. The control tower was commissioned simultaneously with the opening of the airport on 26 February 1979. The approach control facility was moved from Taipei to this airport on 1 September 1981. Then the Taipei Approach Control Tower was instituted.

The responsibility of the approach control tower is to provide air traffic control services to aircraft operating in the Taipei Terminal Control Area and in the Taipei/Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport. In Taipei Terminal Control Area, there are two major civil airports i.e. Taipei/Sungshan and Taipei/Taiwan Taoyuan and two military air bases i.e. Taoyuan and Hsinchu.

In the past three years, the average annual workloads are 116,000 operations for tower and 318,000 operations for approach control. For the year of 2000, the tower is estimated to have a 4% growth, while the workload in the approach control declines 3%.

As the Taipei/Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport has been planned to be the national air transportation center, ICAO forecasts that the air transportation in the Asia/Pacific area will continue to grow in the next ten years. Due to political tense across the Taiwan Straits, the military air activities also grow. Facing future challenges, the controllers of Taipei Approach Control Tower will be dedicated themselves to enhancing service quality without compromising aviation safety.
