Today's Poll Question

POLL: City employees, red-light runners: Do they need to pay the fine?

Cameras were installed last year at key intersections in Newport News. People who run red lights get a $50 fine - unless you're a city employee driving a city vehicle. City employees are not fined, but they do face disciplinary action which is meted at the discretion of the department head.

Do you think this policy is fair?

  • Yes. They are doing important city business.
  • No. If I have to pay, they have to pay.
  • Not sure. If disciplinary action was mandatory - not at the discretion of the supervisor - I would be more inclined to agree with the policy.
  • Maybe. How about if the city had to pay the fine? I think there might be some changes made to this policy if the city had to pick up the tab.
  • Don't care.
