Tweet this, Dick Costolo: An Annoyance actor does OK
In 1994, the Tribune's Sid Smith said this about the Annoyance Theatre's "Modern Problems in Science":
"In it, three amiable young men-Dick Costolo, Rich Fulcher and Phil Granchi-tackle an impromptu thesis suggested by the audience at each performance. Topics so far have included "The Earth Is Shaped Like a Giant Burrito," "Apples Have Kidneys," "Ugly Things Fall Faster Than Pretty Things" and "The Shroud of Turin May Be Used to Predict Baseball Scores." In any event, their job is to prove whatever theorem the audience tosses their way. On a recent Tuesday, the challenge was to demonstrate that "Keanu Reeves' Success Is the Source for All Global Conflict." Taking on the personae of professors of meteorology, women's studies and ichthyology (the study of fish), Costolo, Fulcher and Granchi then engaged in a manic, one-hour festival linking weather patterns, Argentina, Eva Peron (whom they dubbed Reeves' actual mother), "My Private Idaho," William Shakespeare, El Nino and Haiti. Their success varied-improv is an acquired taste, demanding the patience of Job and the concentration of jazz on the part of its audience. Dull spells interweave with explosions of hilarity."
If the name Dick Costolo rings a bell, it's because he is the new CEO of Twitter.
"Dull spells interweave with explosions of hilarity." Prescient line, Sid.
