Restoring FOI ActIN 2003, AFTER tabling legislation to emasculate the 1997 Freedom of Information Act, then minister for finance Charlie McCreevy and minister of state Tom Parlon didn’t even stick around to introduce the Bill; notoriously, they hopped off to the Cheltenham festival, leaving the dirty work to someone else. As Ombudsman and Information Commissioner Emily O’Reilly has often complained publicly, the effect of the amending legislation was to restrict the public’s right to know. Indeed, that was its explicit purpose.

An undated handout photo released on March 2, 2011 by the Urban Search and Rescue team of New Zealand shows rescue services at work on the Canterbury Television (CTV) building which housed an English language school attended by Asian students, predominantly from Japan and China, more than 60 of whom are presumed dead in its ruins. Grieving New Zealanders wept and hugged March 2, as the nation fell silent to mark the moment the previous week when an earthquake tore apart Christchurch and claimed hundreds of lives. ANOTHER LIFE:A FRAGMENT of a map appeared among my e-mails, its Tudor calligraphy stark on the screen. Sent in by a reader, it shows Westport, Co Mayo, in Hiberniae Delineato, William Petty’s famous survey of around 1650. How amazing to find, below the crudely drawn clump of mountains, remote townlands with names surviving today: Aghanny, Askellen, Kinnadoughy and empty Aghgoule on the shore at the foot of Mweelrea.
