Ardith McPherson was a deputy constable and clerical employee serving in Harris County, Texas. Upon hearing about the assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan on March 30, 1981, she told a coworker, "If they go for him again, I hope they get him." Another co-worker overheard the comment and reported it to Constable Walter Rankin, who then fired McPherson.

The Supreme Court heard oral argument in a case that could give the police greater authority to forcible enter a person’s home without a search warrant. The Fourth Amendment’s ban against unreasonable search and seizures bars the police from entering a home without a warrant unless there’s an emergency situation or exigent circumstances. In Kentucky versus King, the Court will decide if the police, by creating exigent circumstances, can enter the home without a warrant.

This case, “Domino’s Pizza v. John McDonald,” entails a breach of contract after Domino's Pizza terminated its agreement with JWM Investments. John McDonald, the president and sole shareholder of the company, brought suit under a section of the Civil Rights Act of 1866 (42 U.S.C. Section 1981).He claimed that Domino's ended its contract because he was black, a violation of the Act, which gives all citizens, regardless of race, the right to make and enforce contracts.

In 1975, Wisconsin Democratic Senator William Proxmire introduced what he called the “golden fleece award of the month.” It was given to governmental agencies that sponsored programs and research the Senator thought to be a waste of tax dollars. On the floor of the Senate, in conferences with his staff, and in a newsletter sent to over 100,000 of his constituents, Senator Proxmire focused on the work of behavioral scientist Ronald Hutchinson, labeling his research as “nonsense.” Mr. Hutchinson sued for libel, arguing that Senator Proxmire’s statements defamed his character and caused him financial loss.
