MCA announces 2010-11 stage season: Dance, Stew and Abbey Theatre
“The Astronaut's Birthday”: this new production from Chicago's Redmoon Theater was inspired by 1950s science fiction and evokes the drive-in movies of the era. (Sept. 9-26)
International Contemporary Ensemble: The young classical ensemble offers three distinct concerts. (Sept. 11, 2010; Feb. 24 and June 4, 2011)
Superamas, “EMPIRE (Art and Politics)”: The hybrid performance company Superamas performs a fictionalized re-enactment of a Napoleonic battle. This satirical company, based in Vienna and Paris, will visit Chicago in the fall. (Oct. 2-3)
Teatro de Ciertos Habitantes with MAVerick Ensemble, “El Gallo”: This Mexico City-based company performs an experimental opera with a backstage theme. (Oct. 6-10)
Sankai Juku, “Hibiki: Resonance from Far Away”: The Harris Theater will host the Chicago debut of this widely acclaimed Butoh dance company, directed and choreographed by Ushio Amagatsu. (Oct. 20)
Big Dance Theater, “Comme Toujours Here I Stand”: This multimedia theater piece reinvents the French New Wave film “Cleo from 5 to 7,” shot in Paris in 1961. It features live video and a title song by Robyn Hitchcock. (Nov. 4, 6 and 7)
Stew: The writer-performer-musician plays alongside his longtime collaborator Heidi Rodeward and their Afro-Baroque cabaret band, The Negro Problem. (Nov. 12-13)
JASC Tsukasa Taiko “Taiko Legacy 7”: The Chicago-based taiko percussion ensemble makes its seventh appearance at the MCA. (Dec. 19)
Betontanc and Umka LV, “Show Your Face!”: A collaboration between the Slovenian dance-theater company Betontanc and the Latvian puppet theater company Umka LV. The show is about courage (or the lack thereof) in the 20th century. (Jan. 14-16)
Every house has a door, “Let us think of these things always. Let us speak of them never.”: Lin Hixson and Matthew Goulish, formerly of the Goat Island performance group, join international collaborators to create a new dance-theater piece. (Feb. 9-13)
Abbey Theatre of Ireland, “Terminus”: The venerable Irish theater company returns to Chicago with a new work by the writer-director Mark O'Rowe, set in Dublin's docklands. (March 2-6)
Trisha Brown Dance Company: In celebration of its 40th anniversary, the modern dance company presents early works, as well as a site-based work in the MCA galleries. (April 15-17)
