  • Stark Honesty (for once) in Leinster House

    Maybe it’s the Dog Days of August but there is an air of considerable fatalism in Leinster House these days. Talking to seasoned politicians this week, two strong messages came forward, both of them surprising to a greater or lesser extent.

  • Latest Poll . . . Joe Higgins, MEP?

    Campaigns matter. I always cite the example of John Major running for re-election as British Prime Minister in 1992. Almost universally written-off, he famously got out his soapbox and went on the hustings in a successful fight to stay in power.

  • Soldiers of Destiny Fight Rearguard Action

    Tomorrow will tell a tale when we get the opinion poll rankings for the European candidates in  The Irish Times. But Fianna Fáil must have been downhearted by their showing in today’s overall party standings (click here).

    Seamus Brennan came up with one of the best summations for Bertie Ahern, when Ahern was Fianna Fail chief whip at a time the party was riven by splits and sulphorous enmities.

    “As chief whip, Bertie Ahern learned to come down the white line and take both sides of the street with him. I don’t know how he got away with it.” (more…)
