Welcome to Our Digital Hotlist Special Issue

October 10, 2010

Heat. It's a strange thing. You can't see, taste or hear it. But, boy, can you feel it. In compiling our list of what platforms and publishers will matter most to marketers in the coming years, we look first for a compelling growth rate. We take into account audience size and revenue or earning potential. But we also have to put great store in an instinctive feel for what is going to be big. This feel is developed as we follow and report on these entities and talk to the people creating and running them, as well as their partners and their critics. Read Full Article

Content Farms: Angels or Devils?

October 10, 2010

Many Web publishers harbor a special vitriol for Demand Media, along with its brethren, Yahoo's Associated Content and AOL's Seed. These businesses employ a content model that's growing faster than poison ivy across the media landscape: Hundreds of thousands of everyday contributors crank out general interest articles and videos. The model burns the backsides of many traditional publishers. It also scares the hell out of purists. Read Full Article

Digital Hotlist 2010

October 10, 2010

Social media stars shine in our annual ranking of the leading digital players. Facebook tops the list. Twitter moves up a notch to No. 2. Foursquare debuts in the third position. Also of note: the Huffington Post rises; Hulu tumbles, but stays on the chart. All told, six of the 10 slots are filled by newcomers, a testament to the continued innovation and volatility in the space—and the fickle leanings of consumers. Read Full Article

Meet the Digital Hotshots

October 10, 2010

Youth is wasted on the young, except in the digital space, where you launch new media ventures, exploit bleeding-edge technologies and sometimes get bought by Google. Unlike traditional media where young execs typically climb the ladder, young execs in digital often start out at the top. We certainly had plenty to choose from when compiling a list of five execs under the age of 30 who are setting the pace for where digital goes next. Read Full Article

The Social Contract

October 10, 2010

I left The Social Network movie feeling stunned and exhilarated. (Imagine if all of life were scripted by Aaron Sorkin and directed by David Fincher!) Maybe it's analogous to bare toes shod in rubber flip-flops hitting virgin snow on a freezing morning. After a night of coding. Drunk. It really is a morality Rorschach. It's not clear that Zuckerberg stole from the Winklevoss twins, although certainly he handled their interactions very badly. Read Full Article

Soul of a New Machine

October 10, 2010

At the Standard Hotel in New York City's fashionable Meatpacking District, the latest work from American installation artist Tony Oursler is unveiled. Is It a Post-Web World?

October 10, 2010

The futurist side of the equation is that the openness and discovery of the Web is naturally giving way to closed ecosystems of content. The other side is that we're going against the true spirit of the Internet by needlessly reproducing features available on the open Web. Are users picking apps as a reaction to confusing and unlimited choices? Or is the idea of a closed ecosystem being driven by entrepreneurs and marketers looking to lock in customers? Social Media Who's Who

October 10, 2010

Social media offers marketers vast potential for consumer connection. Nielsen recently reported that social networking sites are visited by three-quarters of global consumers who go online. But for many (if not most) marketers, the challenge of social media is not about quantity—it's about quality. The pressing issue is knowing who, exactly, is visiting social networking sites, blogs and other social media, as well as their motivations for being there. Read Full Article
