'So great a branch of his Revenue endangered'
| Letter to Sir Robert Holt expressing concern that he had supported
smiths in and around Birmingham in their failure to pay Hearth Tax.
Charles II introduced Hearth Tax as a means of raising money in the
face of economic difficulties. It was levied between 1662 and 1688,
and consisted of a half-yearly payment of one shilling for each hearth
