'So great a branch of his Revenue endangered'

Letter to Sir Robert Holt expressing concern that he had supported smiths in and around Birmingham in their failure to pay Hearth Tax. Charles II introduced Hearth Tax as a means of raising money in the face of economic difficulties. It was levied between 1662 and 1688, and consisted of a half-yearly payment of one shilling for each hearth in the occupation of persons with property above a certain value.
