NY Times Minimalist Column Ends, Bittman Branches Out

My favorite traveling foodie, DIY kitchen guru, and curmudgeonly wise-ass, Mark Bittman, is ending his popular column, The Minimalist. Since 1997, it has been a New York Times Dining section favorite, teaching home cooks that well-made meals needn't be elaborate nor take forever to prepare.  Bittman's dry wit, his insistence on minimal time, ingredients, and technique, and his voracious appetite for new and inventive dishes made him a must-read for anyone with pretenses for homemade dining supe[...] read »

Epic Business Tools Review Part 1: In Which I Become Ill and Leave for Bucharest

Five minutes after I was told I’d be going to Bucharest, I vomited. Not from the thought of going to Bucharest—I’m an ironic fan of the architectural style known as Socialist Realism, and have always wanted to visit the outstanding example in Bucharest known as the House of the Republic. This expulsion was instead the result of an abrupt-onset stomach ailment of unknown origin that left me doubled over in my office for most of Monday morning. read »

    I'm Headed To Bucharest

As I tap this out, I'm sitting on a runway at Kennedy Airport aboard a Jet Airways flight to Belgium. There's mood music playing--it seems to be a Clavinova version of "Heal the World"--but I'm hearing mercifully little of it thanks to the pair of Bose QuietComfort 15 noise canceling headphones that I'm wearing. read »

    Recession-Proof Airports

At least four airports in the United States proved to be recession-proof: Atlanta, JFK, Denver and San Francisco International Airport. Airports Council International reports that during the recession, a lot of carriers focused more on international traffic, which gave the larger international gateways, such as the ones above, a bit of a cushion. Leisure Group Travel.com reports, "U.S. spending in June 2010 by U.S. travelers on foreign carrier passenger fares totaled $2.4 billion (imports), up[...] read »

Why Winter Is Still Bright In The Caribbean

I'm pleased to introduce Laura Foster, Travel & Lifestyle Editor of Beach Tomato, the soon-to-be launched online magazine dedicated to uncovering the best of beach culture. Sign up here for more info. Utter the word 'Caribbean', and the mental image that most likely springs to mind is one of crystalline waters lapping silky white sands with cornflower blue skies sparkling above. You might be swaying in a hammock in the shade of palm trees, a glass of golden rum to hand, to the sound of waves[...] read »

Essential Business Tools: What I'll Be Packing

Last week I introduced my upcoming run-through of  a businessperson's trip from hell. The idea is to simulate the experience of many salespeople and Wall Street types whose bosses walk into their offices and tell them to be on the next flight to London, Shanghai, or Yekaterinburg. read »
