People who qualify for a bus pass

Permanent residents of Medway born before 6 April 1950 qualify for a bus pass when they reach the age of 60 years.

However, the pension age for women is progressively being moved from 60 to 65 to bring this in line with the pension age for men by April 2020. As a result, all people born from 6 April 1950 onwards will qualify for a bus pass on the day that a woman born on the same day reaches state pension age.

To calculate your state pension age, visit pensions.direct.gov.uk/en/state-pension-age-calculator/home.asp

People born on or after 6 April 1955 will qualify for a bus pass when they reach their 65th birthday.

In addition, people with the following disabilities may qualify for a free bus pass:

  • blind or partially sighted;
  • without speech;
  • profoundly or severely deaf;
  • with a learning disability;
  • with a disability or having suffered an injury that has a large and long-term adverse effect on their ability to walk;
  • without arms or having long-term loss of the use of both arms;
  • any disability that would lead to someone being refused an application for a driving licence on medical grounds (other than as a result of persistent misuse of drugs or alcohol).

If there is uncertainty about who qualifies for disability reasons, the council will consult with the applicant's GP.

Companion pass

If you have difficulty travelling by yourself, you can apply for a companion pass which enables somebody to travel free of charge on the bus with you. However, please note that:

  • free travel for the companion is now available for journeys which start in the both the Medway Council and Kent County Council areas. The passholder can travel anywhere in England within the times allowed.
  • The £30 charge for the issue of a companion pass has now been removed. However, the passholder does need to provide evidence of why they depend on somebody travelling with them and the issue of these passes is at the discretion of the council.
