Community Officer sets the standard for Love Medway competition

Date: 22/12/2010           Category: Community safety team

Medway Council Community Officer Louise Scully took these stunning riverside pictures in Rochester at the start of her morning shift.

Louise, who patrols River Ward as part of her job, took them in the hope of inspiring residents to enter the council's Love Medway photography and video competition.

The creative contest launched at the end of November with the aim of revealing what’s great about your neighbourhood.

The Love Medway campaign launched in September to encourage residents to take more pride in their part of Medway by, for example, using bins to drop their litter or picking up after their pets.

It also aimed to highlight work being done by the council to keep Medway clean, safe and green with residents encouraged to report litter and other environmental issues.

The Safer Communities Love Medway competition is seeking to capture on film and print the best of Medway; photographs or video that sum up what’s great about Rochester, Rainham, Chatham, Strood, Cuxton, Halling and the villages of the Hoo peninsula.

Cllr Mike O’Brien, the council’s portfolio holder for community safety and enforcement, said: “Love Medway has been about lifting pride in Medway and encouraging people to help us take care of their streets and parks.

“We're after images - like these - that capture the best of our neighbourhoods be it favourite parks and views or displays of community spirit from litter clear ups to local events.”

The competition is split into two categories.

1. Photography - An image that captures the best of your part of Medway

2. Video - A video (maximum 2.5 minutes) illustrating what your community is doing to keep Medway clean, safe and green.

The business led Chatham Town Centre Forum is supporting the competition with a donation providing prizes for the winner of the 16+ categories and for the top three entrants in the Under 16s sections.

Entries should be sent by disc or memory stick to Love Medway competition c/o Communications, 5th Floor, Gun Wharf, Chatham, ME4 4TR. Deadline for entries has been extended to Friday, 26 February 2011.

A selection of entries will be featured on the Medway Council website www.medway.gov.uk/environment and social media including Flikr and Facebook. Full competition rules will also be posted on the site.
