Gothic Art came into prominence during medieval times, in the middle of the 12th century, following the Romanesque Art movement. The style first appeared in sculpture and architecture but was soon joined by paintings and illustrations. Typically, classic Gothic Art has a religious theme, portraying good or evil, life or death, heaven or hell. The works of Italian painters Andrea Di Bartolo and Guariento Di Arpo are good examples of this style and era.
Modern Gothic art has grown noticeably darker, depicting images that evoke fear and sometimes disgust. Death, evil, blood, skulls, and vampires are popular subjects for contemporary Gothic Art -- still a recognized and somewhat popular style in the US and abroad.
