LOS ANGELES — Isabella Rossellini is ready to portray more animal sex in "Green Porno." The second season of her short films starts May 5 on Sundancechannel.com.

I asked how she hit on this topic. "I proposed the idea of making films about animals, because that was my interest, but I knew sex was everybody’s interest," she told me. "So I’m making short films about the sex life of different animals, and they are quite scandalous. They make love in funny ways."

Why scandalous? "Some of them are hermaphrodites, some of them change sex during their lifetime — things that if we would do it as human beings, we would be arrested," said Rossellini, the star of "Blue Velvet." "But they do it naturally."

Rossellini, the daughter of Ingrid Bergman and director Roberto Rossellini, plays the animals in elaborate costumes. I asked which animal was most difficult to play.

"I think the anchovy, because the anchovies, they swim in a school," she said. "All my costumes are made in paper, so we had to create lots of anchovies in paper. But they had to move all together, and I have had to move with them. … The hardest thing to photograph, for me, was to try to be in the middle of all these paper anchovies and also do their movement."
