Fran Stuchbury Interviews New York Sentinels Owner William Mayer

UFL Access contributor Fran Stuchbury spoke to New York Sentinels owner Bill Mayer at the UFL Championship media day in Las Vegas. Mayer is the founder of Park Avenue Equity, has been involved in private equity investing for more than 35 years.

Fran Stuchbury: After the Sentinels suffered a 0-6 season; a lot of fans have been asking if Ted Cottrell will be the head coach for the Sentinels next season?

Bill Mayer: I think that is what we are talking to Ted about right now and what we can do for next season so we don’t go 0-6 or next season go 0-10. I think that he probably will come back but we are going try to manage this a little differently.

FS: What does the New York need to do to improve its team?

BM: There was a different approach that was taken by the New York team, for by example the Florida team.  If you look at the rosters, New York was the youngest. So New York much more development and Florida had the most NFL players. So what I think we what we learned is you really have to have a blend of some experience as well as some young players.

FS: What venue will the Sentinels play its home games next season?

BM: As far as a venue in New York, just think about it. Where do you have to play? You either are going play at Giants Stadium; I don’t want to do that because I’ll never get under New Jersey with both the Jets and the Giants. I should be playing on Long Island and I should be probably be playing at Citi Field, the new Mets stadium. We have to play in the New York area and there are not a lot of choices. I think Hartford is too far away from New York. If you go to Hartford that means you move the franchise to Hartford.

FS: How did you feel about the fans support with the games played at Giants Stadium and in Hofstra?

BM: I think that we had, I don’t know if its bad luck. When we played in Giants Stadium, the second game of the World Series was being played at Yankees Stadium. When we played at Hofstra, the sixth game of the World Series was being played at Yankee Stadium. It was tough, so I think the fan support was good given the circumstances but we have to do a better job on the whole marketing of the team.

FS: What do you plan to do to get more fans to come to games in 2010?

BM: Having the team in the local market is going help a lot. So they would be living in the New York area as opposed to living in Florida. We had a couple of cities where we did things locally and a couple cities where we did things nationally. For New York we did the ticket sales nationally and we plan to do that locally in 2010.

  1. Interesting ; I wonder what’s going on. There is little indication of the Mayer wanting to move the team.

  2. This looks like a Chest game. Best moves win. I’m sure Mr. Mayer has the moves he wants to make. I would think that Ted Cottrell should stay.
