Instant scans give extra insights into causes of illness
State of the art scanners at a unique £20 million facility for the University of Edinburgh and NHS Lothian will enable researchers and doctors to study the causes and spread of diseases including multiple sclerosis, schizophrenia, cancer and heart disease.
The new Clinical Research Imaging Centre, the first fully integrated imaging facility of its kind in the UK, was officially opened by HRH, The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
The imaging equipment will allow investigations to take place without invasive procedures and can scan organs in under a second. They will also be able to track the flow of blood through vessels, determine the spread of disease and assess the effectiveness of new drug treatments.
SFC provided funding of £450,000 for the Centre, which was also supported by the Medical Research Council, Wellcome Trust, British Heart Foundation and European Regional Development Fund.
