International collaborations

As a leading innovator in policy and solutions development, JISC works internationally with organisations in support of the global infrastructure to ensure appropriate and sustainable ICT provision for the UK education and research communities.

Leadership, development and provision for the UK education and research community remain the primary drivers for JISC’s international operations and engagement

Broadly, JISC engages internationally for the following reasons:

  • critical to delivery where international engagement is essential to effective delivery by delivering economies of scale
  • leadership where JISC engages with key influencers to ensure world-class provision
  • expert exchange where JISC leverages expertise from other partners / countries
  • support to the international community where JISC supports opportunities for information exchange and activities

International priorities 2007 - 2009

As outlined in JISC’s strategy 2007-2009 JISC’s international activities will focus on:

  • bandwidth on demand to provide dedicated network links for finite period to support major network applications
  • peering of access management systems to allow seamless resource sharing across participating countries
  • building a common approach to content management, especially through open access across appropriate research data and outputs, and learning and teaching resources
  • involvement in identifying, building and developing international open standards to support interoperability of relevant ICT systems and resources
  • promoting a common understanding of effective ICT infrastructure and its use (e.g. the e-Framework, e-infrastructure for researchers, content sharing) through collaborative research and development programmes

International visitors to JISC

JISC frequently welcomes international visitors to discuss developments in ICT for education and research.

Members of JISC are able to support short visits by ministries, organisations and agencies responsible for the national provision and development of ICT for education and research. Please note it is not usual for JISC to support institutional visits.

Owing to the constraints of personnel and financial resources , it may not always be possible to respond positively to requests from visitors or delegations.
