Using federated access management to provide services to a wide range of users is a simple and effective process. However, before doing so, you will need to look at your information management strategy; specifically how you build an institutional directory that meets the UK federation’s standards for exchanging information.

Improving and extending service delivery through federated access management

Where UK colleges and universities can get further advice and guidance on how to provide access to internal services using federated access management

Norman Wiseman, Head of Services and Outreach, JISC (Duration: 1.19 mins)

Conducting an information audit and building a directory is probably the biggest investment (certainly in time) you will make in delivering (and receiving) greater access to services and resources. Institutions that have undertaken this work have found it to be a hugely valuable exercise, not just in terms of providing services, but also in creating – often for the first time – a single, strong, secure, auditable and accountable institutional directory.

Fortunately there is plenty of help available. JISC, the UK federation, and several institution partners have put a lot of effort into building federated access management capacity within the academic community, and there are many institutions that can help you.

The UK federation’s help desk is well equipped to provide advice and assistance on federated access management, single sign-on implementation and identity management strategies.

JISC has also produced an identity management toolkit that guides you comprehensively through the process.

UK Access Management Federation

We recommend that you begin your journey by contacting the UK Access Management Federation (UK federation). They can advise you directly and also put you in touch with others in the federated access management community who can provide specific help on a range of subjects.

The UK federation provides a single solution for institutions wishing to implement federated access management. The UK federation is run by JANET UK, the UK’s education and research network.

Identity management toolkit

The Identity Management Toolkit is a collection of guidance and practical support tools for all stages of reviewing and improving your organisation’s identity management: from auditing current processes and systems, through defining sustainable policies and clear operational instructions for administrative and technical staff, to finding informed and impartial guidance before making purchasing decisions.

The Toolkit is funded by JISC and has been developed and produced by a partnership of four institutions: LSE, University of Bristol, Cardiff University, and Kidderminster College.

It has been tested while in production with real identity management projects at several UK institutions.
