Davies proud to carry Welsh flag

Swimmer David Davies will carry the flag for Wales at the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony on Sunday.

Davies, a double Olympic medallist, said: "It's a massive honour."

Badminton player Nathan Robertson will be England's flag bearer in Delhi and he said: "I'm surprised and humbled by the honour. It's fantastic."

Cyclist Ross Edgar will have the honour for Scotland while weightlifter Mark Montgomery will carry Northern Ireland's flag.

Robertson, 33, from Nottingham won the mixed doubles in Melbourne in 2006 with Gail Emms, who has since retired, and is now partnered by Jenny Wallwork.

Edgar, who won an Olympic silver medal in 2008, has one gold, one silver and two bronze medals in his Commonwealth Games collection.

Edgar 'surprised' to fly Scottish flag

The 27-year-old, who is competing in his third Commonwealth Games, said: "It is an honour to have been chosen to carry the Saltire and the fact that the selection is made by the other athletes makes it even more special."

Montgomery, who competed in judo in 2002 and 2006, was persuaded to switch sports in 2008.

He won British Championship bronze in the 96kg category in June and, when not training, runs a day nursery with his wife.

"The Commonwealth Games is the only multi-sport event which Northern Ireland can be represented in and to be selected for flag bearer is the biggest sporting honour that anyone could have," said Montgomery.

"It will be crazy to walk out into the stadium, which is now sold out for the opening ceremony.

"There is a great atmosphere in Team Northern Ireland and to walk out in front of them will be the highlight of my sporting career so far."

Robertson, who is appearing in his fourth Commonwealth Games for England and has seven medals, including team gold in 2002, added: "It's a bit of a reflection of the efforts I've put in in the past and the medals I've won I suppose.

"I'm looking forward to the feeling I get when I walk into the stadium. It's such an adrenaline rush just to be there in the parade so to be carrying the flag, will be one of the best moments of my career."

England's chef de mission Craig Hunter said: "He'll do us proud. [Nathan is a] world champion, a gold medallist last time and the team will be right behind him.

"We'll make quite a spectacle and a dramatic entrance when we march into the stadium. "

Welshman Davies is the defending 1500m freestyle champion but has struggled for form this year and has recently relocated to Cardiff to rejoin former coach Dave Haller.
