Nashville assumes everyone will bolt as soon as they become UFAs because it’s Nshaville and no-one wants to play there. Even though that’s probably not true.
Ottawa assumes everyone will stay as soon as they become UFAs because it’s Ottawa and everyone wants to play there. Even though that’s definitely not true.

it’s because Nashville is on a very small budget and can’t afford to give these players raises.

Oh hey.
Karina’s right – the Predators don’t retain players like Hamhuis or Paul Kariya because of the internal budget which is well below the salary cap. While Hamhuis (as an example) is a great player, we’ll get good production from Franson or Bouillon for at least half the price. Poile’s good at making a lot out of very little.

David Polie could do amazing things if he ran a team that could spend to the cap. It’s amazing how many players he’s forced to deal away because of budgetary restrictions below the Cap.

but I do wonder if the monetary restrictions help him out… if he could spend to the cap, how many of these free agents would he overpay instead of incorporating roster turn-over into his plan?

Don’t know the exact figures, but one year their payroll was something like 80 million.. geez

Though that supposes Jason Arnott and Dan Hamhuis were worth retaining. Hamhuis may come back to hurt Nashville in short run, but with added minutes given to Nashville’s immense wealth on the back-line, I don’t think it hurts the Preds in the long run.
Supporter of the Sergei Berezin "Give and Go" - You give me puck, then you go to hell
This is correct. We’ll notice a downturn in the defense for some of next year, I think, but once Franson grows up and Blum/Ellis acclimate we’ll forget all about Hamhuis.
Arnott was an interesting case. He was a square peg in a round hole (1C, when he’s a perfect 2C), and an overpaid one.

By my count, we’ve got around $9M to spend up to the internal budget limit, but you’ll have to allow for the Hornqvist and Franson extensions. After those, I’d say that leaves us with $5M to chase a playmaking center.

They’re a small-market team that doesn’t realize they’re in a small market.
If they realized this fact and acted accordingly, they could be the Predators North and have a never-ending supply of cheap young talent. Instead they have to keep up with their “rivals” the Leafs, and so they piss away valuable picks to acquire rental players to max out at the second round.
Everyone shits on the Leafs for failing to adapt after the lockout and becoming a terrible team, and it’s definitely warranted. The Leafs wasted 3 seasons trying to compete like they did pre-lockout, and have now spent 2 seasons trying to do the damage. But they’re using their money more effectively and are slowly moving on the right course.
It has been 5 years since the lockout and Ottawa STILL operates like it’s 2003-04.

hmm… if Washington deems Volchenkov too pricey I wonder if they try to go the Michalek route… how much do you think Z.Michalek would command on the open market?

not as much as he would get if he played somewhere else.
I’ve heard 2.5-3m thrown around, but that’s just hearsay.
Not even the Toronto Maple Leafs could kill my optimism
Tyler Ennis: Freed from Portland!
i think he could get anywhere upwards of 4.5 depending on the amount of suitors and how much volchenkov gets

With not enough quality for the dough….although a lot of that is Finger and Phaneuf’s regression. Here’s hoping we somehow get rid of Finger (even if it’s just the minors) and that Phaneuf can regain his form (even if he doesn’t get nominated for a Norris)

I’ve already assumed Finger’s in the minors.
And I believe in Dion Phaneuf. HE’S GOING TO BE HUGE. BRIGHT LIGHTS AND SHIT.

i have to disagree with the reports the caps are not intrested in signing volchenkov. untill he signs somewhere else i think washington is the most likely landing spot
Mike Green in regular season- Norris Canadiate. Mike Green in Playoffs- Nowhere to be found
Can they afford another $5 mil player though? Or will letting Theodore walk allow them to spend some money on UFAs?

Not much space
Backstrom took up Theodore’s space, raises to Fleischmann Fehr Schultz and Semin take up Nylander’s space. Not enough space to add that pricey of a guy. Probably around $3 million max, with getting rid of say Flash in lieu of cheaper talent like Perreault or Andrew Gordon

I get the need to sign guys like Fleischmann, Fehr, Schultz and Semin, but if I was a Caps fan and the team didn’t pick up a big shut-down defenseman this year, I’d be pissed.

The hope is between Carlson-Alzner-Schultz-Poti someone gives solid D, so I wouldn’t mind too much (as it is they lost because the secondary scoring and PP disappeared this year). I just want a top-4 D to play on the 3rd pairing.

Makes sense, I obviously do not know a lot about your prospect pool. Just thinking that they need someone who can log big minutes and shut-down the other teams top guys. Volchenkov would fit that bill.

I’m not a big fan of his durability, and there’ll probably be a bidding war which will drive his price him, and he’ll get years which teams closer to the cap can’t afford. This FA class is so weak :’(

you could always take a risk on Willie Mitchell, see if he can recover from his concussion.

pretty darned good shut-down defenseman
but the concussion makes him high-risk
"The only way out is in a body bag. Go Leafs Go." - Blinky
It could also make him take a pay cut, and maybe even a 1-year contract. Gets a shot at the Cup, gives the Caps a shut-down guy and if he doesn’t work out, the Caps can just wash their hands and try again.

:(
If he keeps playing, I hope it’s still in Vancouver. From what I’ve heard he wants to keep playing there too. Although I really think he should consider hanging up the skates…it’s taken him a long time to recover from that hit, and who knows what might happen the next time.

In the games they LOST, the Caps gave up 2, 3, 2 and 2 goals in regulation, excluding an EN goal. Not sure lack of D did them in. More like lack of luck.
by The '67 Sound on Jun 21, 2010 5:38 PM EDT up reply actions
Sure, but moving forward in the playoffs, do you think that their D-corps would have been able to handle a team like Philly or Chicago?

by Plea From A Cat Named Felix on Jun 21, 2010 5:41 PM EDT up reply actions
No, but I don’t know if those teams could have handled the Caps forwards, especially with the way they were playing early in the SCF. Live by the offense, die by the offense :(
