Santo Domingo.- "Exemplary" and "inspiring" is how the United Nations yesterday called Dominican Republic’s humanitarian response for Haiti after the January 12 quake that killed as many as 300,000 people and left 1.5 million victims.

In a statement the United Nations System stressed "the limitless examples of “solidarity provided by the Government, civil society, the private sector and all Dominicans" to the Haitian people after the earthquake that devastated the impoverished nation more than seven months.

It hailed the manifestations of aid and commitments that arose in Dominican Republic from the catastrophe’s onset as “innumerable," and in order to “provide aid and protection to the catastrophe’s victims by using its own resources, also often limited and a display of solidarity and unconditional generosity to save lives and alleviate the immediate needs of the affected population."

"The unity and inspiring humanitarian response given by the Dominican Republic to the earthquake’s victims have been and will continue being a model to follow for the rest of humanity," the UN System said.

The recognition will be handed to president Leonel Fernandez today by UN representative in the country Valerie Julliand, to mark the World Day for Humanitarian Assistance, established in 2008.

Pity that the Haitian web site does not reflect the conduct by the DR ,rather than give an impression that the DR has made no contribution

As humanitarian as the DR wants to show itself it is unfortunate that the DR had a deeper sentiment and motive and that was to line the pockets of a a large number of DR officals to make money of the misery of another nation in this case Haiti.

Leonel although has always spoken to the rest of the world that it cannot carry the burden of Haiti by itself had an oppurtunity thrown in its lap to beneifit enormesly financialy by this natural disaster.

jim I hope that is not a true indication of your nature ,,it really is a low class posting and without a shred of evidence and in fact all the evidence points completely the other way . For some reason you think you know better than the UN officials there on the spot and why would you try to belittle a really classy quick response by the DR to the disaster next door .

There is no humaitarian bone in Leonel's body. He is a self promoting enterpreneur for himself, his wife and his cronies.
If he was such a humaitarian why is he not at home wresteling with the poverty in his own country, working to elevate the educational system of his country and fighting his own corruption machine..

Dumb asses.

LF's promise of money was just that. He has no intention of giving them money he stole or can steal in the future.

Losers.

Please.

You don't have to defend yourself to Ricardolito.

Any negative comment about the government (that pays him) will be denied. You are better off wasting your time talking to blutarsky.

Imagine that the UN looking to the DR as a model for how to do things, could it be a cop-out to the UN's motto "always too little, too late" ?

What no mention of SP ? he must be having a hollyrock moment by now.

It's amazing that a recognition of the Nation-State's honorable conduct during this tragedy should invite the usual vile comments against the people and leader of the nation. Guys, like it or not LF is Presidente of the Republic and the UN or any international organization is going to honor the nation-its people and the State-its government via its President. And by the way, Dominicans of all classes showed "The unity and inspiring humanitarian response given by the Dominican Republic to the earthquake’s victims have been and will continue being a model to follow for the rest of humanity," the UN System said." Allow this post to speak to its intended audience: the people of the Dominican Republic and their Great show of Humanity during the Great tragedy that befell Haiti. Enough of the personal attacks on its leader LF in this particular post. There are many other posts available to show your displeasure.

Atabey,
Don't get me wrong, but.......if we can only get the DR Politicals to do the same for the people of DR minus a earthquake thats all.

In this case , in particular , LF is representative of all decent people living in the DR , who assisted our neighbours in this dreadful disaster ..LF is the elected President and is the recipient of the award on behalf of the DR . So many people assisted by donations and by various acts of kindness , that all can be well satisfied that the UN has recognised this.

Now let us look at the accusation by Jim H that LF is a self promoting entrepreneur for himself , his wife and his cronies., especially in context of this article . The alternative action could have been for him to do nothing , to say that the DR is too poor to assist , to place the army along the border, to refuse all the planes to land in the DR , to refuse the Dominican ports to be used and so then no one could say that maybe he was self promoting .
What a lot of rubbish , he acted as a true leader and all decent Dominicans were proud of how , maybe just for once , he showed the world , that Dominicans could think about others in horrific trouble and not simply about themselves .And all the world applauded ..but not a few down in the mouth losers here who would rather skulk off than say well done

The proven ways to fight poverty is by increasing outside investments which Leonel has done successfully and by spending more on education which is still to be seen and is a long term investment.

Am not into politics ,but what LF did, needs to be commended by HAITI as well as the UN .
As i once said he is the best president HAITI ever had and i sustain such a comentary.
Remeber all the airports at DR were at the desposal of the international aids coming into HAITI and then by roads to their destination as well as bringing in wounded to the DR hospitals and feed them up now.Since then they got stuck with about 1.5 millions illegals ,looking for work and the world community that pledged to help has not done so up to the present.
If that data poblished by some interested party that stipulated DR did not contribute anything in cash, should convert the present and past help DR has given HAITI into dollar value or at list
give those Haitians worker visas starting with the USA,followed by Canada where most HAITIAN communities are located instead of critics and negative comments. Also let it be known the UNIVERSITIES in DR are full of HAITIAN studens for free. These cost money.
