After falling short of winning the last two races, Juan Pablo Montoya finally ended a 113-race winless streak on Sunday by winning the Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at The Glen race at Watkins Glen, N.Y.

“It’s about time,” said Montoya, whose only other win in the Sprint Cup also came on a road course. On Sunday, Montoya led 74 out of 90 laps and finished nearly five seconds in front of Kyle Busch. Marcus Ambrose was third.

Montoya, a former Formula One driver, has improved his oval racing skills, and recently he came close twice to winning only to be foiled by poor pit strategy at the end of the race.

“We’ve lost a lot of them, gave away a lot of them,” Montoya said. “It gets frustrating, everybody fighting. There’s so many things I have to learn. I still make a lot of mistakes.” (The Associated Press)

Nascar: Nascar Tries to Lure Fans Back

Racing executives say that Nascar has suffered more than many other sports in the economic downturn because the racing series relies on a working-class fan base, low fuel prices and the beleaguered auto industry. “Everybody’s still coming, but no one’s spending,” said Susan Behler, a Nascar fan. “Three years ago, I used to spend $200 or $300 every time I came here. Now, it’s a question: do I need it?” (The New York Times)

Nascar: Being Dale Earnhardt Jr.

“It’s hard to maintain your cool dealin’ with three or four P.R. people,” said Dale Earnhardt Jr., who is profiled in The Times magazine. “People think I’m always pickin’ my next move. Hell, I have no marketing savvy. I just do what I’m told. It’s frustrating to hear I should decide whether I want to be a racecar driver or a marketing tool. In Nascar I have to be both.” (The New York Times)

IndyCar: Franchitti Converts Early Lead at Mid-Ohio

Dario Franchitti, of Target Ganassi Racing, dominated the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on Sunday. After taking the lead during the first round of pitstops, Franchitti stayed in front through the remaining two-thirds of the race. Chip Ganassi, the team’s owner, said that Franchitti “was bulletproof on the track and the guys did a great job in the pits and got him out in the lead. That might have been the race right there.” The win was Franchitti’s 25th Indy car win of his career. (ESPN.com)
